Philomena’s Delicatessen is all about our roots in the food industry dating back to Brooklyn pre-WWII. Our heritage is what drives our passion and craftsmanship. Our recipes, items and aesthetic are a close to an authentic Brooklyn delicatessen as we can while nestled in the beautiful Western Maryland mountains.
WHAT IS A DELICATESSEN
Deli is short for "delicatessen", meaning "delicacies." The word does not derive from an Italian word, however it is from German and French origin. Originally deli referred to the food itself, but in time, it began to be used to describe the stores selling the food, mainly the atmosphere of the delicatessen’s themselves. The word originated in New York with German immigrants after the Civil War, but didn’t become the word we know today, until Yiddish-speaking Jews used it to describe restaurants selling corned-beef and pastrami sandwiches, among other items. These are now referred to by New Yorkers as "Jewish Delicatessens" or "Kosher Delis."

Our assortment of cured meats, creamy cheeses, dried and fresh fruits coupled with our jams and preserves will make any event or get together a memorable one. We not only offer a wide variety of catering options but also an assortment of to-go charcuterie picnic boxes that are perfect for lunch on the go, date night, or intimate parties at home.

Our wide selection of homemade soup is a constant favorite among our family and friends. We pride ourselves on only carrying the highest-quality produce, locally sourced and handmade using family recipes. All of our soups are either ready to serve or frozen for home use.

If you love our charcuterie picnic boxes, you’ll love our catering options. We have over two dozen handmade charcuterie boards, all expertly designed and executed per your request for any event. Specializing in weddings and congratulations celebrations, our charcuterie boards will be a memorable asset to your occasion.

We also offer a variety of vegan options as well. All vegan dishes are prepared kosher and 100% Ecolabel Index Vegan Certified.
FRESHLY BAKED BREAD

Certain dishes simply need the best and most fresh ingredients, and that includes the bread. For larger scale catering or specific soup days, we also bake our own handmade artisanal bread for the occasion, because any substitute would be a disservice to the flavor profile of the dish.
WELCOME TO OUR TABLE
Slated to open in July of 2022, Philomena’s Delicatessen will be Allegany County’s premiere Brooklyn inspired Italian delicatessen. Owner and operator, Anthony Tagliaferro, was born and raised in central New Jersey and has spent a lifetime enjoying and preparing traditional New York cuisine. His paternal great grandmother, Philomena Tagliaferro, operated her own delicatessen in WWII era Brooklyn.
Philomena’s Delicatessen will be family owned and operated by Tagliaferro and his wife, Savannah, along with their two children. It is part of the core values of Philomena’s that family is at the heart of the business.
Philomena’s will not only provide patrons with a vast variety of Italian and Jewish fare, but also be a must-see destination. Replicating his Brooklyn heritage, Tagliaferro is creating an experience that Allegany county has not yet seen. Patrons of the luncheon deli can not only indulge in items such as home made Challah bread, potato latkaes, a variety of pasta dishes, antipasto and pasta salads, soups and desserts, but also traditional Italian sodas and hand made Kosher candies.

We will be starting off slow with simple Sicilian and Jewish dishes beginning this fall and expanding to delivery and catering in the winter of 2021.
